Purpose

The Regional Spectral Model (RSM) originally developed at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) has been used extensively in regional downscaling of coarse resolution forecasts, analyses and simulations, which is one of the hottest topics in atmospheric modeling. Recently, RSM has been coupled with Regional Ocean Modeling System or ROMS, and atmosphere-ocean coupled regional simulations have been conducted (Li et al., 2012; Li et al., 2013; etc.). Thus one of the major objectives of this workshop is to introduce the RSM-ROMS system and to hold hands-on sessions for this. The remaining objectives are, as in past years, to provide opportunities for the RSM community to exchange their regional downscaling modeling findings using different versions of RSM. Those versions are (1) the Spectral GSM and RSM merged system (G-RSM) at Scripps/FSU/U-Tokyo, (2) NCEP RSM and MSM, (3)RSM at NCSU and FUNCEME, (4) GRIMS at Yonsei University, (5) CWB RSM at CWB, (6) RSM/MSM at NDU, and others. Furthermore, the RSM workshops are designed to gather together international regional model developers and users, to learn the latest modeling features being developed. Through these discussions we wish to formulate future plans for RSM development. Thus, this workshop does not exclude participation by modelers other than GSM, RSM, and MSM users. In fact, we strongly encourage people engaged with other models to attend, compare results, and discuss general regional model-related problems. There is increasingly high demand for RCM products from impact modelers and practitioners in seasonal forecasts and climate change issues. Therefore, an invitation to participate in the workshop is extended to end-users of the simulation results from RCMs on various time scales for application (climate risk management, wildfire, agriculture, water resources management, energy, etc). Through these discussions we wish to formulate future plans for RSM development.

Workshop Presentation (abstract)

Email your 1-page abstract (200-400 words) to rsm.workshop@gmail.com if you intend to make a presentation. This abstract should describe your relevant work on regional and global spectral models. The abstract should also contain your email address. If there are multiple authors, please specify the presenter. Include this information in the body of the email. We will post your abstract on the RSM Workshop wikispace.

Workshop Registration

The RSM workshop will be held at Yokohama Institute for Earth Sciences (YES), JAMSTEC, Yokohama, Japan. For those who require visa application and/or travel support, the deadline to register for the workshop is September 30, 2014. For else, the registration deadline is 31 October, 2014. Registration fee is free. Reception fee is 2,000 JPY for students and 5,000 JPY for others.

Travel Support

Limited financial support will be available for students, participants from developing countries, and other invited participants. If you are eligible and need support, please note this in your registration form. Priority will be given to applicants who have secured matching funds from other sources. A commitment for matching funds should be provided in the form of a letter from the applicant's institution or other funding source.
